Zócalo

(Curiosities)

City: Mexico-City

Information

The Zócalo (in Dutch called "Constitution Square") is a vast cobbled square that measures 195 mx 240 m, so is 46800 m².

Since the time of the Aztec Empire, the square is surrounded by palaces, temples and other architectural landmarks.

It is the tweenagrootste square in the world, after the Tiananmen Square in Beijing and the Red Square in Moscow.

The Mexicans call it El Zócalo square, which means as much as 'basic' or 'base'. There are many festivities held throughout the year, such as rallies, concerts and other events at the square.

Every day at 06:00 h and 18:00 h, the square is used for the ceremony of hoisting the Mexican flag.
