Information
In 1945, about 70 per cent of Anholt Castle were destroyed. In connection with the reconstruction of the castle, the main building was turned into a museum. In the course of time, the exhibition area of the museum has increased to 1,500 square metres, also containing the library and the archives of the Princes of Salm-Salm.
The collection of pictures on display in the museum consists of more than 700 paintings. It is thought to be the biggest historically grown collection in private ownership in North Rhine-Westphalia. Outstanding works of Dutch painters of the 17th century, like Rembrandt, Jan van Goyer, Gerard ter Borch, can be found at Anholt Castle as well as paintings from Flemish (J. Breughel the younger), German (Bartholomäus Bruyn, Holbein, Jobst Harich), Spanish (Murillo) and Italian (Carlo Dolci, Salvator Rosa) masters.
