Gardens of the World in the Marzahn Recreational Park
Attention: Closed between October and end of March: Japanese, Korean and Oriental Garden!

The Recreational Park Marzahn is open to garden art from around the entire world. The cosmopolitan city of Berlin already has five “Gardens of the World”. The overall concept “Gardens of the World” is an ambitious undertaking of supra-regional importance by Grün Berlin Garten und Park GmbH, the operator of the Recreational Park Marzahn. It is intended, above all, to contribute to economic and location advancement in the entire region. This is concurrent with the aims of the community fund “Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure” which has funded the major part of the Chinese, Japanese and Balinese Gardens.

It began as early as autumn 2000: on October 15th the Chinese “Garden of the Reclaimed Moon” » in the Recreational Park Marzahn was opened after a four year construction period.

At 2.7 hectares it is the largest Chinese garden in Europe. It was produced in very close cooperation with Berlin’s sister city Peking: all the planning is Chinese, all building components and even the impressive Thai-Hu stones were imported. The construction was carried out by Chinese craftsmen. The authenticity of the installation is omnipresent for the visitor.

A self-enclosed garden world with a pavilion, ponds, waterscapes, dry garden, and imposing stone installations has been enchanting visitors to the Marzahn Recreational Park since May 2003. The Japanese “Garden of Merging Water” » also displays typical Japanese plants, like Japanese maple, Japanese flowering dogwoods or Japanese lavender.

Protected in the Recreational Park Marzahn glasshouse, the Balinese “Garden of the Three Harmonies” » presents a section of a traditional Balinese housing complex and tropical flora.

A four metre high wall surrounds the “Oriental Garden” »near the entrance Eisenacher Street. The garden courtyard is laid-out in a geometrically quadratic form, and contains waterscapes with fountains and pools. Thus the garden is drawing upon the building tradition of oriental garden culture: the oasis, the hidden font, paradise is often imminently visible.

On April 27st 2006, the new korean “Seouler Garden” », a gift from the city of Seoul, was opened to the public. The garden contains a pavilion, four courtyards and water. The landscape resembles the korean landscape.
