The Masterpieces Are Back
The full range of the collections gives a challenging outline of Western art from early Renaissance to our time. Masterpieces by artists ranging from Cranach, Titian and Rembrandt to Abildgaard, Eckersberg and Hammershøi as well as Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Nolde and Kirkeby are shown together with other main works in the collection in a hanging illustrating new and old connections.

New in Old and Old in New
1600 works are presented in chronological zones interrupted by thematic juxtapositions of artworks from different ages. The method of hanging and the accompanying texts also vary in order to exploit the multiplicity of the collections. Thus the greater part of the old foreign masters are shown in the white museum building, whose light and spacious rooms offer optimum surroundings. Conversely, the modernised rooms in the red, old building act as a challenge to contemporary artworks.
